Standard clear glass has an inherent greenish colour due to its iron oxide content. This green tint is visible particularly when viewing the edge of the glass or in a composite stack of many glass lites. Guardian ExtraClear™ float glass contains less iron oxide than standard clear float glass, resulting in enhanced colour neutrality in transmission and reflection.
In addition to its optical quality, Guardian ExtraClear glass delivers approximately 6% lower embodied carbon than the average European standard float glass.* As of today, it represents the standard (mid-iron) float glass with the lowest embodied carbon value produced in Europe. This performance reflects Guardian Glass’ commitment to Stewardship and ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce air emissions. These improvements are made possible through sustained investments in advanced furnace technologies and energy efficiency projects across our operations in Europe.
Guardian ExtraClear can be heat treated, laminated, or coated, and has a wide range of applications including high performance facades, partitions, store fronts, solar control glass, laminated safety glass, and silk-screen printed glass among others.
The A1-A3 embodied carbon value for Guardian ExtraClear glass produced in Europe (9.64 kg CO2 eq/m2 for a 4 mm glass thickness) was derived from the EPD and verified for conformance to ISO 14040/44, EN 15804, and the Product Category Rules (PCR) through a program operator and independent reviewer.
*As of May 2025, when comparing the cradle-to-gate (A1 - A3) embodied carbon value of Guardian ExtraClear float glass produced in Europe vs. an average calculated from publicly available EPDs from the primary European flat glass manufacturers, the calculated reduction is approximately 6%. This comparison is not based on a third-party verified comparative life cycle assessment (LCA). This comparison is based on internal calculations using publicly available EPDs and acknowledges that not all EPDs use the same methodologies, assumptions, and data quality requirements.
